Square Built a Drive-Thru System for Quick-Service Owners in Florida

Expert insights, industry trends, and actionable tips to help your business thrive while keeping more of what you earn.

Cafe employee holds out Square terminal for customer to pay

Picture the lunch rush at a busy quick-service spot. Cars are stacked six deep. A headset crackles with an order that's half-modifiers. Someone in the kitchen is squinting at a ticket trying to figure out whose burger is whose. One mixed-up bag at the window, and the whole lane slows down. The next car waits, the car behind that one waits, and the customer who just wanted a coffee starts eyeing the exit.

For a drive-thru operation, that's not a minor annoyance. The lane is the business. Speed and accuracy at the window are the difference between a regular and a one-and-done. So when Square announced Square for Drive-Thru in May 2026, it caught the attention of a lot of quick-service owners who've been running their busiest sales channel on hardware that was never really built for it.

Here's what the new system actually does, who it's for, and the part most announcements skip: what it takes to run it well once the press release fades.

What Square for Drive-Thru Actually Is

Square for Drive-Thru is an end-to-end system that connects the three moving parts of a drive-thru into one workflow: order capture at the menu board, kitchen prep, and customer handoff at the window. It's built on top of Square for Restaurants, and Square developed it with two specialized partners: The Howard Company (a 75-year-old maker of drive-thru infrastructure and digital menu boards) and Nanonation (digital signage software).

The features that matter on a busy lane:

  • Order confirmation screens. When a customer orders at the menu board, the full order, including every modifier and customization, appears on a screen they can see. That gives them confidence the order is right and lets your staff catch a mistake before it's bagged.

  • Kitchen display routing. Orders go straight to the correct kitchen station, so the line cook knows exactly what to make without deciphering a paper ticket.

  • Automatic order numbering. Every order gets labeled automatically, which helps the right bag reach the right car during a rush. That's the single most common point of failure at the window.

  • One connected platform. Because it's built on Square, the drive-thru ties into the same reporting, payments, marketing, and cash-flow tools you'd use everywhere else, and open APIs let you keep any third-party tools you already rely on.

A franchisee Square quoted, John-Michael Johnson of PJ's Coffee Fort Mill, summed up the appeal: customers see their whole order on screen, staff catch mistakes immediately, and automatic numbering keeps the team moving "even with a large menu."

The Honest Caveat: It's Not Available to Everyone Yet

Worth being straight about this. As of the announcement, Square for Drive-Thru is in an Early Access Program, with broader availability "coming this summer." It's also clearly aimed at multi-location QSRs, the operators with real volume and complexity at the window, not a single-location café with an occasional pickup order.

So if you run a high-volume drive-thru concept, this is genuinely worth a conversation now. If you're smaller or earlier-stage, the more useful move is probably to get the underlying Square for Restaurants setup right first (the POS, the kitchen display, the reporting) so you're ready to layer drive-thru on when it's available to you.

Why the "End-to-End" Part Cuts Both Ways

There's a real advantage to having order capture, kitchen, payments, and reporting all on one platform: fewer systems to reconcile, one source of truth for your numbers, and no duct-taping a payment terminal to a POS that doesn't talk to it.

But "all on one platform" also means that when something goes sideways at 12:15 on a Friday (a screen freezes, a reader stops reading, a config change didn't save), you need that one platform to respond fast. A drive-thru can't take a number and wait on hold. Every minute of downtime is a line of cars that isn't moving.

That's the gap most owners don't think about until they're standing in it.

Where SimpliPay Fits In

SimpliPay is a payments firm based in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, and we're an authorized reseller of Square. That means two things for a Florida quick-service owner looking at drive-thru.

First, we set the foundation up correctly. Square for Drive-Thru is only as good as the Square for Restaurants system underneath it: the menu structure, the modifiers, the kitchen display routing, the combos, the reporting. Get those wrong and the fancy order-confirmation screen is just showing customers a fast, accurate version of a badly built menu. We walk through the actual setup with you before anything goes live.

Second, and this is the real differentiator: when something breaks at the window, you call us, not a corporate support line. We're local. We know your account. We handle the back-and-forth with the platform on your behalf and get you to an answer faster than you'd get there alone. For a sales channel where downtime is measured in stalled cars, having a human in your corner who picks up isn't a nice-to-have. It's the thing that protects your busiest hour.

We also do it without locking you in: month-to-month, cancel with 30 days' notice, and same-day approval to get started.

The Bottom Line

Square for Drive-Thru is a serious, well-built answer to a real problem. Drive-thru is where speed meets complexity, and most QSRs have been running it on tools that weren't designed for the job. The order confirmation screens, kitchen routing, and automatic numbering all target the exact moments where lanes slow down and orders go wrong.

The technology is the easy part to get excited about. The part that actually determines whether your drive-thru runs smoothly is everything around it: the setup, the menu logic, and who answers when something breaks during a rush. That's where a local partner earns its keep.
