Square Now Lets You Accept Bitcoin and Convert Sales Into It. Should Your Business Care?

Expert insights, industry trends, and actionable tips to help your business thrive while keeping more of what you earn.

A barber in Lynnwood, Washington recently described his approach to bitcoin in plain terms: "Dollar-cost averaging into bitcoin is allowing me to hedge against inflation. The money I'm actually saving is growing as opposed to losing value every year." He's not a crypto trader. He's a small business owner who flipped a setting in his payment dashboard.

That's the shift worth paying attention to. Bitcoin for small businesses used to mean clunky third-party plugins and a lot of technical homework. With Square Bitcoin, it's now baked into the same dashboard a merchant already uses to take card payments. That makes it accessible in a way it wasn't before, and it raises a fair question: is this actually a smart move for your business, or just a shiny new button?

Let's walk through what it does, what it costs, and the honest case for and against, because this is one where the hype and the risk both deserve airtime.

Two Different Features, Don't Confuse Them

Square Bitcoin is really two separate tools, and they solve different problems.

Bitcoin Payments lets customers pay you in bitcoin at checkout using the Lightning Network, about as simple as accepting a card. The customer scans a QR code with a Lightning-enabled wallet (like Cash App), and the payment settles in seconds. You choose whether to receive it as bitcoin or as automatically converted USD. There are no chargebacks, near-instant settlement, and zero processing fees through 2026 (then a flat 1% after). One limit to know: bitcoin payments currently cap at $600 per transaction.

Bitcoin Conversions is the one the barber was talking about. You set a percentage of your daily card sales, up to 50%, to automatically convert into bitcoin, which is custodied in your Square wallet. Think of it as a "round-up jar" for a long-term savings bet: a little goes in every day, automatically, without you having to think about it. You can buy, sell, hold, or withdraw anytime from your dashboard, and tax reporting (a Form 1099-DA when you sell) is generated for you.

According to Square's own seller survey, 12% of sales are being set aside by participating sellers for conversion, and 89% of interested sellers say they plan to use bitcoin as a long-term savings account, not as a trading play.

What It Costs

  • Bitcoin Payments: 0% processing through 2026, 1% after. No chargebacks, instant access.

  • Bitcoin Conversions: a 1% conversion fee on the daily amount converted (0.50% on Square's Premium plan). Convert 10% of $1,000 in sales and you'd receive $99 in bitcoin and pay a $1 fee.

  • Buy/sell: 1%, plus a small spread.

  • Withdrawals: standard (24-hour) is free; faster speeds carry small fees.

No-fee bitcoin payments through 2026 is a genuinely aggressive offer. The conversion fee is modest. The cost side is not where the real question lives.

The Honest Case Against, Because Someone Should Make It

Here's the pushback worth hearing before you turn anything on.

Bitcoin is volatile, and that's not a footnote. Square says it plainly in their own disclosures: bitcoin's price can't be predicted, it has gone up and down, and you may lose money. Setting aside 50% of your daily sales into an asset that can drop 20% in a week is a very different decision than putting it in a savings account earning a fixed yield. For a business with thin margins and tight cash flow, that money may be better kept as dollars you can actually count on.

Bitcoin transactions are final. No chargebacks sounds great until you need to issue a refund. For bitcoin payments, refunds are only available as Square gift cards, and traditional chargeback protections don't apply. That's a real operational change to think through.

It's not available everywhere. Square Bitcoin is open to U.S. businesses except those based in New York, and sellers have to clear Square's Know-Your-Business verification. (For Florida businesses, that's not a blocker, but it's a reminder this is a regulated, evolving space.)

The reasonable version of the bitcoin pitch isn't "put half your revenue into crypto." It's "dollar-cost average a small, fixed slice you can afford to leave alone for years, and treat it as a diversification bet, not a savings account guarantee." A barber converting a few percent of daily sales is making a very different bet than an owner converting the maximum.

Where SimpliPay Fits In

SimpliPay is a payments firm based in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, and we're an authorized reseller of Square. On something like bitcoin, our job isn't to talk you into it. It's to make sure you understand it before you flip the switch.

That means a real conversation about whether bitcoin conversions fit your cash-flow reality, what percentage (if any) actually makes sense for your margins, and how the refund and tax mechanics change your day-to-day. New features like this are exactly where a local human in your corner beats figuring it out alone from a help article. When you have a question about a transaction, a hold, or how a setting affects your numbers, you call us, not a corporate line, and we get you a straight answer fast.

We do it month-to-month, with no long-term contract, cancel on 30 days' notice, and same-day approval to get set up on Square.

The Bottom Line

Square Bitcoin makes accepting and saving in bitcoin genuinely easy for the first time: no plugins, no separate exchange, all inside a dashboard you already use. The no-fee payments window through 2026 is a strong offer, and for owners who want to diversify a small, affordable slice of revenue over the long term, the conversions tool is a low-friction way to do it.

But "easy to turn on" isn't the same as "right for your business." Bitcoin is volatile, refunds work differently, and the smart play is a measured one. The move isn't to ignore it or to dive in headfirst. It's to size it to what you can actually afford to leave untouched, and to set it up with someone who'll tell you the truth about the trade-offs.
