Selling CBD in Florida? Here's How to Take Payments Without Getting Shut Down

Expert insights, industry trends, and actionable tips to help your business thrive while keeping more of what you earn.

Ask anyone who's run a CBD business and they'll tell you the same story. The product sells. The customers are loyal. And then one morning the payment processor freezes the account, no warning, funds held, and a form letter explaining that "your business type is outside our risk tolerance." For a lot of CBD sellers, the hardest part of the business has never been the product. It's finding a way to take a credit card that doesn't blow up a month later.

That's the backdrop for why Square's CBD program matters. Square is one of the few major, mainstream processors that openly supports CBD, and that's a real thing for an industry that's spent years getting quietly dropped by everyone else. Here's how the program works, what it costs, and what to watch for before you sign up.

Why CBD Is Treated as "High Risk" in the First Place

It helps to understand why processors are skittish, because it explains the rules. CBD lives in a legal gray zone: hemp-derived CBD with 0.3% THC or less is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, but it's regulated unevenly state to state, and card networks classify it as high-risk. High-risk means more chance of regulatory change, more scrutiny on health claims, and more processors deciding it's simply not worth the exposure.

So when a processor does support CBD, it comes with structure: an application, documentation, and rules about what you can and can't say. That's not red tape for its own sake. It's the framework that keeps your account open.

What Square's CBD Program Actually Offers

Square lets approved sellers accept payments for hemp and hemp-derived CBD products with 0.3% THC or less, in most U.S. states, across every channel:

  • Online. A free Square online store, or sync Square with your existing site.

  • In person. Card payments through Square Point of Sale or Square for Retail.

  • In-app. Integrate Square payments into your own mobile app.

  • Third-party platforms. Pre-built plug-ins for WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, and others.

It also folds in the rest of the Square ecosystem: Afterpay (buy now, pay later), Square Loans for CBD businesses ($300 to $350,000 for eligible sellers, often next business day), PCI compliance handled as merchant of record, and an in-house risk team included in your rate rather than billed as an add-on.

What It Costs

Square's published CBD program rates are higher than its standard rates, which is normal for a high-risk category:

  • Online: 3.8% + 30¢

  • In person: 3.5% + 10¢

  • Keyed in / card on file: 4.4% + 15¢

If you process over $250,000 a year, or CBD is only a slice of your overall sales, you may qualify for a custom rate. That's a conversation worth having rather than just accepting the published numbers.

The Two Things That Get CBD Accounts Frozen

This is the part most "how to accept CBD payments" articles gloss over, and it's the part that actually keeps your account alive.

First: the application and documentation. Square needs specifics: business details, your refund policy, recent bank statements, a description of your products, your online store and social accounts, and a certificate of analysis (COA) confirming Delta-9 THC percentages for each item. Get any of this wrong or incomplete and you're either denied or approved-then-flagged later. The COA piece trips up a lot of sellers; every product needs current lab documentation.

Second: health claims. Square's program, like every compliant CBD processor, does not allow claims that your products cure, treat, or aid conditions like anxiety, inflammation, depression, PTSD, ADHD, or cancer. This is the single most common reason CBD accounts get shut down. A well-meaning product description, a customer testimonial on your site, or a social post making a medical claim can put your whole account at risk. Staying compliant isn't a one-time setup. It's an ongoing discipline across your website, packaging, and marketing.

In other words, the rate isn't the risky part of CBD processing. The paperwork and the wording are.

Where SimpliPay Fits In

SimpliPay is a payments firm based in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, we work with high-risk businesses, and we're an authorized reseller of Square. For a Florida CBD seller, that combination matters more than it might sound.

The application is exactly the kind of thing that goes more smoothly with someone who's done it before. We help you assemble the documentation right the first time (the COAs, the bank statements, the product descriptions) so you're not denied over a missing form or approved and then frozen over a fixable detail. We also help you pressure-test your website and marketing language against the claims rules before it becomes the reason your account gets flagged.

And then there's the part every CBD owner cares about most: what happens when something does go wrong. An account review, a hold, a question about a transaction. Instead of waiting on a corporate high-risk support queue, you call us. We're local, we know your account, and we handle the back-and-forth with the platform on your behalf. In an industry where a frozen account can mean a frozen business, having a human in your corner who actually picks up is the whole game.

We set it up month-to-month, no long-term contract, cancel on 30 days' notice, with same-day approval where eligible.

The Bottom Line

Square is one of the most accessible mainstream options for CBD businesses, and that's genuinely good news for an industry that's used to being turned away. The program is real, it covers every sales channel, and it comes with the broader Square toolkit behind it.

But getting approved is the easy part. Staying approved (clean documentation, current COAs, and marketing that never crosses the claims line) is what keeps the lights on. That's where most CBD sellers get burned, and it's exactly where a local partner who knows both the high-risk world and the Square program earns its place.
